The School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences (SAFS) at the University of Washington has an opening for one post-doctoral Research Associate (100% time) to conduct research on the project Spatial Analysis of a Near-Surface Acoustic Backscatter Layer in the Eastern Bering Sea under the supervision of Professor John Horne.

The objective of this project is to characterize the acoustic frequency-dependent spatio-temporal properties of a persistent, near-surface acoustic backscatter layer (NSL) in the eastern Bering Sea. Data are available from recent summer acoustic pollock surveys (2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008). The specific objectives include 1) description of meso- and large scale spatial patterns of frequency-dependent backscatter of the NSL, 2) description of small-scale spatial patterns (i.e. echogram morphology) of frequency-dependent backscatter of the layer, 3) develop analytical methods to integrate frequency-morphology information to describe spatial patterns, 4) formulate recommendations for the design of a field sampling program to determine species composition of the layer, and 5) preparation of a manuscript that characterizes the near surface backscattering layer in the eastern Bering Sea.

This post-doctoral research will help determine whether an index characterizing spatio-temporal properties of the NSL may be informative for walleye pollock stock assessment and as a descriptor of walleye pollock pelagic habitat. This work supports NOAA?s strategic goal of protecting, restoring, and managing the use of coastal and ocean resources through an ecosystem approach to management.

Qualifications: Ph.D. in quantitative fisheries, biology, zoology, or a closely related field.

Essential: experience in univariate and multivariate statistical methods, parameter estimation methods, ability to effectively communicate in both written and oral formats, and the ability to work well both collaboratively and independently.

Desirable: Experience in fisheries acoustics, exploring and analyzing biological/ecological multivariate data, familiarity with ecological, fisheries-oceanography, and marine science principles

Supervision: The supervisor of this position will be Dr John K. Horne (UW/School of Aquatic and Fisheries Sciences). Co-supervision and collaboration will be provided by Dr. Chris Wilson (NOAA/AFSC) and Dr. Patrick Ressler (NOAA/AFSC).

Duration of appointment: This is a twelve-month position, with potential renewal dependent on availability of funds.

Limitation on appointment: Maximum appointment as a Research Associate is within six years after receipt of Ph.D.
